Hey Aspirants, We know English section is a bottleneck for many aspirants and because of this weakness they did not able to crack the competitive exams like BANK PO/Clerk, SBI PO/ Clerk, SSC CGL/ CHSL etc. So from today, we are providing lectures on English Grammar in Text Format. This is the Top 10 Rules of Pronoun part 2.

RULE NO. #11: 

Some rules regarding It:

We should use It for Country, non living thing, animal and new born child. And when above mentioned things are in plural we should use They.
Ex-

  • The baby is crying. It must be hungry.
  • America and Israel are friendly nations and now they are facing opposition in UN.
  • I saw a stray dog. It was not good in condition.

RULE NO. #12: 

We should use It as introductory subject in expressing time, distance, temperature, weather. In this case It is used as dummy or empty subject.
Ex-

  • It is raining today.
  • It is 2 o’clock.
  • It’s getting a bit late now.

RULE NO. #13: 

We should use It as subject to put emphasis on noun or pronoun.
Ex-

  • It is him who had done this work.

RULE NO. #14: 

Generally We should not use noun after It. In place of noun we use pronoun.
Ex-

  • It seat is mine. ( Incorrect )
  • It is my seat. ( Correct )

RULE NO. #15: 

Mind the difference between Reflexive Pronouns and Emphatic Pronoun.

  • When the effect of action taken or done by subject reflects upon the subject then it is called as Reflexive Pronoun.
  • When a pronoun is used for only emphasis it is called as emphatic pronoun.

Ex-
1.He killed himself. ( Reflexive Pronoun )

2.He himself told me about your condition. ( Emphatic Pronoun )

RULE NO. #16: 

After verbs like absent, acquit, apply, avail, enjoy, exert, forget, over-reach, resign, pride, amuse, adapt, adjust, when they are used as reflexively we should put reflexive pronoun.
Ex-
The minister acquitted himself from all the allegation. ( Correct )

He absented himself from the class. ( Correct )

He adapted himself to the world. ( Correct )

RULE NO. #17: 

After verbs like open, move, bathe, feed, form, hide, keep, lengthen, make. Speed, steal, stop, qualify, gather, turn, we do not put reflexive pronoun.
Ex-
He hide himself in the wardrobe.  ( Inorrect )

He hide in the wardrobe. ( Correct )

He bathed himself in the pool.  ( Incorrect )

He bathed in the pool. ( Correct )

RULE NO. #18: 

We can not use reflexive pronoun as a substitute for the subject.
Ex-
Myself and Ravi submitted the report. ( Incorrect )

I and Ravi submitted the report.

RULE NO. #19: 

We use Either + of  in the meaning of ‘one or the other’ But in the meaning of more than two things we use ONE or ANY.
Ex-
Either of these four people came yesterday. ( Incorrect )

Either of these two people came yesterday. ( Correct )

One of these four people came yesterday. ( Correct )

RULE NO. #20: 

We use Neither + of  in the meaning of ‘not one or the other’ But in the meaning of more than two things we use NONE.
Ex-
Neither of these four people came yesterday. ( Incorrect )

Neither of these two people came yesterday. ( Correct )

None of these four people came yesterday. ( Correct )
